O Sopro da Gândara / Gândara’s Breath

Até meados do Séc. XX, em dias de fortes nortadas, esta seria uma cena comum na Gândara: areias soltas transportadas pela força do vento voavam e soterravam tudo no seu caminho. Recordem-se as palavras de Manoel Alberto Rei, Regente Florestal, que projectou e coordenou o inicio da sementeira das dunas do litoral gandarez “… as areias soltas, não encontrando nenhum obstáculo, avançaram assustadoramente, e na sua onda destruidora, fizeram desaparecer magníficos terrenos de cultura agrícola, causando a ruína da lavoura regional…”. Hoje em dia, embora a uma escala muito mais reduzida, ainda é possível observar este fenómeno em dias de forte ventania.

Há cerca de um século, a paisagem da Gândara litoral, hoje coberta por uma frondosa mata de Pinheiro-bravo Pinus Pinaster, seria muito semelhante a esta. Dunas de areia solta e vegetação escassa, entrecortadas aqui e ali por alguns pequenos bosques e lagunas interdunares, quebrariam um pouco a monotonia da região, entre as vilas de Quiaios e Mira, numa largura que por vezes atingia os 5 Km. Graças à intervenção do homem, hoje toda essa faixa está coberta de arvoredo e só pontualmente, especialmente junto à costa, podemos ter um vislumbre dos tempos de outrora.
