Paraíso ou Inferno? / Heaven or Hell?

Last spring poplars produced a enormous amount of seminal wool that potentiate the uptake of beautiful images for our eyes, but which hampered the lives of countless species of animal. I observed hundreds of dead insects and other creatures and among those who had life, many had great difficulty to move in that white mantle. One of them was this snail, which sometimes disappear under the plant whiteness, desperately trying to find a way out. For us mere observers, a dignified image of a fairy tale ... for small creatures that tried to cross it, an endless hell. Hence the question: heaven or hell? What is your impression?

Primeiras geadas / First frosts

In the last days of Autumn cold winds that blow from east have favored the emergence of the first frosts. Morning wake up covered with a white blanket of ice resulting in extensive range geometric shapes which delight myself…today was in my backyard, on one of my cabbages…

Flores Encantadas / Enchanted Flowers

Amplexo nas dunas / Amplexus in the dunes

Common Toads (Bufo bufo) are the larger amphibians occurring in Portugal. They are quite robust, with big eyes colored orange and warty skin on the back and flanks. In Gândara during the breeding season is normal to see thousands of individuals in search of a appropriate place for the deposition of eggs, which may lead to roam several kilometers during this migration. The amplexus is the way that these beings have found to ensure that the male genes are passed on to future generations .... which, in most cases, can be translated into a long and happy tour for "D. Juans "but a cumbersome burden for females.

OUTONO / AUTUMN

In “A Serra Encantada”, de João Petronilho & David Guimarães

“Summer is gone.
The mornings are colder and the deep green canopy of Chestnut trees and Oaks fades in a palette of warm colours; yellows and reds inundate the landscape.
The day light time decreases .The light is weaker, softer and walks warmly and sweetly along the mountain ridges. (…) Peaceful and serene, autumn arrives and with it radical changes in the lifestyle of many living beings that can be found in the valleys and slopes of the mountain ...”

Brandindo as asas / Brandishing the wings

Quando a temperatura baixa / When the temperature falls

When from the viewpoint one descends the steep slope along a narrow trail that leads to the base of Frecha da Mizarela waterfall , we are swallowed by a grove of oak trees, a relic of the extensive oak woods that once covered the valleys and slopes of Serra da Freita .

Novo mundo / New world

A árvore do Pica-pau / Woodpecker tree

Generally woodpeckers are shy birds that are always cautious and alert. Most times our contact with these species comes down to hearing his distinctive drum on the trunk of a tree or fruit of the signs of modern times, on some metal pole power lines of medium and high voltage. Sometimes we observe them in their straight flight with broad undulations. Result of of the many fires that raged by all the country, it is increasingly common to observe them on isolated trees, where its silhouette allows us to obtain different images from usual. This was the case. This time with a Great Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopus major.

No fundo do charco / In the bottom of the pond

The porosity of the sandy soils of Gândara is a characteristic which makes them permeable to the entry of light, heat, air and water. In rainy seasons it is often to see air bubbles in the bottom of temporary ponds, which result in part from the release  atmospheric gas trapped between the grains of sand, and in part on the breathing  and photosynthesis  phenomenon of aquatic plants that populate the bottoms of ponds.

Bicos-de-cegonha / Stork's Bill

Until the middle of twentieth century, in the days of strong north winds, this would be a common scene in Gândara: loose sands transported by the force of the wind flew and burying everything in its path. Just remember the words of Manoel Alberto Rei, Forest Regent who designed and coordinated the early sowing of coastal dunes of Gândara "... the loose sands, finding no obstacle, frighteningly advanced, and in his destructive wave, they made disappear magnificent agricultural fields, causing the ruin of regional agriculture ... ". Nowadays, although at a much smaller scale, it is still possible to observe this phenomenon in days of strong wind.

The sun was already lying down and a light breeze blew over the waters of Barrinha Mira. While walking along the existing path on the shores of this lake, the faint whisper of the reeds and other sounds of nature intoned in the air, while a smell of sea air went softly into my nostrils. The silhouettes of some flocks of waterbirds that swam in the water mirror became increasingly diffuse and difficult to see. It was then that one black figure emerging from the banks and started running, sloshing on water with a flutter of wings. It was a coot. Instinctively, I wielded the photographic camera and clicked in its direction. Of several photos I could do this was the best which captured the vision I have of this species at this time day: brief and fugax.

On a cold autumn morning while walking through a path into the forest, my eyes bewitched with the variety of shapes and colors with which the various species of mushrooms were opened to the world. On the ground or on the trunks and branches of trees, the silent battle for the perpetuation of each species was constant, interrupted only by brief moments when one or another ray of sunlight tore the canopy of trees and cleared the foliage covering the ground. In those moments, full of light and by luck or by fate, I managed to capture and immortalize one of these beautiful and ephemeral scenes.

The Arrival of Flamingos / A Chegada dos Flamingos

The Slow Worm Anguis fragilis is the only lizard of our herpetofauna which do not has legs. Due to this physiological aspect is often confused with snakes. Harmless, spends most of the time refuge under fallen logs or galleries rodents. Go out at dusk to hunt small insects, slugs, snails and spiders. For me, it is a unique reptile. It is with great pleasure that I dedicate this picture to my good friend David Guimarães, a constant source of inspiration but also of heated discussions about the art of photography!

Hiperactividade?

Personally, I've had the experience of an individual of this species accustomed to come eat my on hand (at the distant year of 1995). Tempo de perpetuar / Time of perpetuate

Summer visitor in Portugal, the Little Ringed Plover Charadrius dubius, is a rare and irregular breeding bird in Gândara, occurring in very low numbers. Breeds near water, both in sandy soil as in former gravel pits. The nest is a hole in the ground and easily pass unnoticed in the eyes of predators or of our species. Its clear yellow orbital ring makes it unmistakable among other species of plovers passing through our country.

À memória do meu pai / To the memory of my father

I photographed these two beautiful flowers for about a year. It was a very cold day  and the last light allowed me to freeze that simply and magical moment. To the memory of my father!
